Artists have existed from time immemorial. Art has come a long way from drawings on the cave walls to paintings in the museum. For many centuries people have created arts in different forms and have included them in their lives. It is part of life. Art helps us see our lives differently and can also influence society. Although it has evolved in many ways the best thing is that art has become accessible to all via technology especially social media like Instagram. Now we can enjoy its benefits online via phone or laptop. Artists are not limited to displaying their work in galleries after harnessing the power of the internet. People can view the drawings and purchase them sitting at home.
Mental health issues are subtle but creep into our lives and can destroy us. People can easily deal with mental problems with exercises, doing things they love, or various forms of therapy. But only a few of you would know that art can be therapeutic too. Today artists are using canvas to not only raise the concern but also to help many having those issues.
What, art therapy can help improve mental health… are you kidding?
No, we are not joking. Art is a proven therapy against mental disorders. It is an idea of using colours to aid mental or psychological health. It became viral in the 1940s and British artist Adrian Hill was the brain behind it. He realized the power of Art while recovering from tuberculosis. It helps in dealing with many issues, rehabilitation to processing past trauma.
How and why does art influence our well-being?
The main goal of the therapy is to help the struggling person in relaxing and connect with their emotions. It helps people look inside their minds, process emotions, and release them. It also helps psychologists in understanding patients. It assists people who are unable to speak their heart out or what they are thinking.
Art and active creative thinking increase dopamine levels and make people happy. For those who do not know the link between stress and dopamine, a neurotransmitter, people with high levels of this chemical have low levels of anxiety and depression.
Stress Buster
Different forms of art like drawing, painting, etc divert our minds from distressing thoughts. Scientifically, the stress hormone cortisol decreases when we are relaxed and art makes us calm.
Creative Thinking
Visiting art galleries or fairs or even viewing the work of artists online can be inspiring and motivating as it stimulates the imagination. An eye of Van Gogh or Monet is not necessary to be influenced by sketches. Anytime you feel burned out just take a break and be creative.
Self Confidence and Self Esteem
At times of no pressure, we work more efficiently and have a sense of higher self-confidence. Just doing something with imagination can boost your self-esteem as there is a sense of pride and accomplishment even if you do not make art regularly. It can help you be happy and proud of yourself.
