Social media and news coverage have predictably given Mundhe the “Singham IAS” treatment. Given the pace of the raids, you can see where the nickname came from.

Let’s talk about how one officer turned food safety from a boring compliance checkbox into one of the most closely watched stories in the state, and why that could be a good thing for the rest of us.

Wait, Who Is This “Singham IAS” Everyone’s Talking About?

Meet Tukaram Mundhe, a 2005-batch IAS officer who took charge as Commissioner of Maharashtra’s Food and Drug Administration on May 25, 2026.

Mundhe comes from a small village in Beed district and from a farming family that faced financial hardship. He studied at a Zilla Parishad school before clearing the UPSC.

He is well known for his strict, no-nonsense administrative style. His transfer record has become almost as famous as his work: around 25 postings and transfers over roughly two decades. Supporters see that as the cost of his uncompromising style, while critics have sometimes questioned his methods.

What Exactly Has He Been Doing?

Since taking charge, the Maharashtra FDA has conducted more than 1,100 inspections across the state, seized food stock, suspended licences and shut down establishments found violating food-safety norms.

And the big names haven’t been spared.

The crackdown has reached Domino’s and Pizza Hut outlets, while licences at warehouses linked to Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart have also been suspended following inspections that found hygiene and food-safety violations.

When your ten-minute delivery is suddenly out of stock, there’s now at least a chance the FDA got there first.

Mundhe has also gone after the milk supply chain, bringing collection centres, dairies, transporters, distributors, wholesalers and retailers under stricter scrutiny.

Okay, but Is This Actually Making Food Safer?

Restaurants, hotels, bakeries and clubs have had good reason to revisit their kitchen hygiene, pest control and compliance practices with surprise inspections happening across the state.

And food adulteration and poor hygiene are very real public-health concerns. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has publicly backed stricter action against food adulteration and violations of safety standards, saying they can endanger people’s health and lives.

But the drive hasn’t been beyond scrutiny either.

In August, the Bombay High Court ordered the FDA to pay ₹5 lakh in compensation to Pune-based Gurunanak Dairy and Sweets after the establishment remained shut even after a re-inspection found it compliant with 35 of 36 parameters. The court said the regulator’s intention was laudable but questioned the continued suspension. Mundhe later said the FDA stood by its original action, which followed a food-poisoning incident, and would examine its legal options.

Strict enforcement can protect consumers, but regulators still have to follow due process.

For most of us, though, the benefit of a serious food-safety drive is much less dramatic than viral raid videos. It could simply be the samosa you eat next week being prepared in a kitchen that is paying a little more attention to hygiene because an inspection could happen.

So What Does This Mean for You?

Food safety finally has a spotlight. You’re allowed to ask a restaurant about hygiene, freshness and its FSSAI licence. Hopefully, asking these questions starts feeling less unusual.

Report, don’t just rant. The Maharashtra FDA accepts public complaints about food-safety violations, and the current drive has put greater attention on enforcement.

Support the businesses doing it right. The clean kitchens shouldn’t lose out to the ones cutting corners.

Note: This piece reflects reporting available as of August 21, 2026.
