Every year, as the rains start to subside, the coast slowly gears up for the festivities. People return to Sindhudurg after leaving home for work in cities like Mumbai and Pune. They travel back to their villages, while workshops and local markets get busy in preparation for Ganesh Chaturthi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the centre of the celebrations is the Ganpati idol. In Sindhudurg, many of these idols are traditionally made using clay, including shadu mati<\/em> as well as locally available varieties of clay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clay was never the trendy choice here<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In many parts of the Konkan, clay idols have long been part of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Today, as cities increasingly look for more eco-friendly alternatives to Plaster of Paris (PoP), the traditional clay Ganpati has found new relevance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sindhudurg has a long tradition of family-run idol-making workshops, where Ganpati idols are hand-shaped or made using large moulds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The preference for clay is as practical as it is cultural. Plaster of Paris does not dissolve easily in water and can remain behind after immersion. Natural clay, on the other hand, disperses much more readily in water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a region where rivers, creeks and the sea are part of everyday life, that difference matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The people behind the clay Ganpatis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A clay idol is demanding to make. The clay needs to be shaped and dried slowly before it can be smoothed, painted and finished. Throughout the process, artisans have to make sure that the idol does not develop cracks. Sindhudurg’s humid monsoon weather can make this even more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The work begins weeks before Ganesh Chaturthi, and many of these workshops are run by families who have been making idols for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the time and skill involved do not always translate into higher earnings. Rising material costs and customers bargaining over prices can make it difficult for small artisans to earn enough from the season. For many families, the tradition continues because the craft has been passed down through generations and remains closely tied to the festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the coast changes everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Ganpati immersion in coastal Konkan often takes place in the same rivers, creeks and stretches of sea that shape everyday life here. The district is home to rivers such as the Karli, along with several estuaries and tidal creeks that eventually meet the Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no out-of-sight water body where the effects of immersion simply disappear. What goes into the water remains part of the same coastal ecosystem that local communities depend on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where the choice of a clay idol makes a difference. Natural clay disperses much more readily in water than PoP and does not leave behind the same kind of persistent material after immersion. The paints and decorations used on an idol matter too, which is why choosing natural materials wherever possible remains important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why protect the ocean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Konkan coastline supports fishing communities and marine biodiversity. It also supports a growing tourism economy built around places such as Malvan and Tarkarli. Rivers, creeks, mangroves and the sea are closely connected to both the livelihoods and the landscape that make Sindhudurg what it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coast gives so much to Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations; the people of Sindhudurg simply give some of it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you don’t need to live by the coast to follow the idea.
