And then there are books you pick up because the title and the cover itself makes you curious.

Kiss Me Like You Mean It by Laura Wood belongs firmly in the second category.

At first glance, it sounds like the kind of book that promises romance, complicated feelings and perhaps a few butterflies along the way. But what makes the story interesting is that it isn’t simply about falling in love. It is also about figuring out what you want, who you are when nobody is telling you what to do, and whether you are brave enough to choose the life, and the person, that actually makes you happy.

And honestly, isn’t that what growing up is all about?

When romance is not just about romance

One of the things that makes a good romantic story work is when the romance doesn’t exist in isolation.

There needs to be a life around it. Friendships, insecurities, family expectations, mistakes, bad decisions and all those little things that make a person who they are.

Kiss Me Like You Mean It brings that emotional side of romance into the picture.

The story follows characters who are trying to navigate attraction and relationships while also figuring themselves out. And that makes the romantic moments feel more meaningful because they aren’t simply there for the sake of giving us a happy-ever-after.

There is uncertainty. There are mixed signals. There are moments when you want the characters to just say what they are thinking (Like c’mon, please just say it out loud!)

And, of course, there are moments when you are sitting there thinking: please, just kiss already!

The charm is in the little moments

Romance doesn’t always need grand declarations, or loudest actions.

Sometimes, it is the small things that stay with you, a conversation that goes on a little longer than it should, a look that says more than words, the awkwardness of wondering whether someone feels the same way, or that moment when you realise that things have quietly changed between two people.

That is where Kiss Me Like You Mean It finds much of its charm.

Laura Wood keeps the story rooted in those little emotional shifts that readers of contemporary romance will recognise. It feels less like watching two people suddenly fall head over heels and more like watching feelings slowly become impossible to ignore.

And those are often the romances that feel the most relatable.

The messy side of falling for someone

We often talk about romance as if it is supposed to be effortless and should follow the below-mentioned storyline:

Meet someone. Fall in love. Everything works out.

Real life, obviously, did not get that memo.

Falling for someone can be confusing. You can overthink a text, misread a conversation, wonder whether you should make the first move and spend far too much time trying to figure out what the other person is actually thinking.

Kiss Me Like You Mean It embraces some of that messiness.

And that is probably one of its biggest strengths.

The story doesn’t make romance look perfect. Instead, it gives its characters room to be uncertain, vulnerable and occasionally a little ridiculous, basically, human.

A coming-of-age story hiding inside a romance

What we particularly liked about the story is that beneath the romance is another question: what kind of person do you want to become?

Because growing up isn’t only about finding someone to love.

It is also about finding yourself.

It is about learning what you will and won’t accept, understanding the difference between what you think you should want and what you actually want, and becoming comfortable enough with yourself to let someone else into your life.

That gives the story a little more depth than a straightforward romance.

The relationship becomes one part of a larger journey rather than the entire journey.

Why the title and the cover works

There is something wonderfully direct about the title Kiss Me Like You Mean It.

It sounds romantic, but there is also a challenge hidden inside it.

And that idea runs nicely through a story about relationships. Because ultimately, romance is not only about the grand gestures. It is about sincerity.

Do you mean what you say?

Do you mean what you feel?

And when it really matters, are you willing to show it?

Sometimes the simplest question is the hardest one to answer.

Should you read Kiss Me Like You Mean It?

If you enjoy contemporary romance with relatable characters, complicated feelings, emotional growth and plenty of those little moments that make you smile at a page, Kiss Me Like You Mean It is definitely worth adding to your reading list.

It is the kind of book you can pick up when you want something romantic but don’t necessarily want a story that takes itself too seriously.

So, if you are looking for your next feel-good romance, pick up Kiss Me Like You Mean It, settle in and let Laura Wood remind you that sometimes the best love stories are the ones where the characters have to figure themselves out before they can figure each other out.

And if the title/cover has already made you curious, well… maybe that is your sign to read it.

There are some books you pick up because the story sounds interesting.
