But does it solve a real problem, or simply give us another reason to want an upgrade?

There is something about an iPhone launch that makes even a perfectly functional phone feel slightly less exciting.

A new model arrives with a better camera, a faster processor or a feature we did not know we wanted until we saw it demonstrated. Suddenly, we start comparing. What felt perfectly adequate a week ago begins to look dated.

Research around consumer behaviour has linked FOMO, social influence and time-based scarcity to increased purchase interest. Pre-order windows, launch-day buzz and a constant stream of reviews can all add to that sense of urgency.

Now Apple has something much more visibly different to sell.

The iPhone Duo, announced in September 2026, is Apple’s first foldable iPhone. Its larger inner display is designed for activities such as reading, watching videos, gaming and using multiple apps at once. Pre-orders in India began on October 16, with availability from October 23.

That makes it one of Apple’s more unusual iPhone launches in recent years. It also raises a fair question: does a foldable iPhone offer enough practical value to justify an upgrade, especially when the phone we already own still works?

What does the fold actually give you?

There are real advantages to a larger screen that still fits into a phone-sized device.

Someone who reads long articles, edits documents, compares information across apps or watches content while travelling may genuinely find the additional screen space useful. Multitasking becomes easier when two apps can remain visible at once. The device can also be positioned in different ways for video calls, viewing content or using features such as the clock and calendar without holding it.

For some people, that convenience may reduce the need to carry another device.

That is where the Duo becomes interesting. A new piece of technology makes more sense when it changes something about how you actually use it.

But not everyone needs that.

If most of your phone use is WhatsApp, Instagram, calls, photographs and occasional browsing, the larger foldable screen may be impressive without being especially useful. Novelty and necessity are not the same thing.

We are actually keeping our phones for longer

This is where the timing of a phone like the Duo becomes more interesting.

IDC data has previously shown that smartphone replacement cycles in India have been getting longer. People are holding on to their devices for more time instead of replacing them every couple of years.

That means phone companies have a harder job than simply offering a slightly better camera or battery.

They need to make the next device feel different enough to restart the desire to upgrade.

A foldable iPhone does exactly that. It changes the shape of something we have become extremely familiar with. Even if your current phone works perfectly well, the Duo looks new enough to make comparison almost inevitable.

Then there is the price

The question becomes harder when the device sits at the very premium end of the market.

At that point, the purchase is no longer only about whether the technology is impressive. It is about how often you would actually use what makes it different.

Will the larger screen replace another device for you? Will you regularly multitask on it? Will it make reading, editing or working on the move noticeably easier?

If the answer is yes, a foldable may offer something genuinely useful.

If the main appeal is simply that it is the newest and most unusual iPhone available, then the price starts looking much harder to justify.

There is nothing wrong with buying something simply because you enjoy new technology. Wanting a gadget does not need to be dressed up as necessity.

The problem begins when a launch convinces us that a device we were perfectly satisfied with yesterday suddenly needs replacing.

First-generation technology also comes with questions

The Duo is Apple’s first attempt at a foldable iPhone, which means buyers are also paying to enter relatively unfamiliar territory.

How will the inner display age after years of folding and unfolding? How expensive will repairs be? Will people still value the foldable format once the initial novelty wears off?

Those questions do not make the device a bad purchase. They simply matter more when someone is paying a significant premium to be an early adopter.

So, do we need a foldable iPhone?

For some people, the answer may genuinely be yes.

A writer working while travelling, someone who reads extensively on their phone, a frequent multitasker or a person hoping to carry fewer devices may get real value from the extra screen.

For many others, the Duo may be more desirable than necessary.

And perhaps that is the more interesting thing about this launch. Smartphone makers are trying to make phones exciting again at a time when consumers have fewer reasons to replace the devices they already own.

The foldable iPhone may turn out to be excellent technology. But before upgrading, the better question is not whether it is better than your current phone.

It is whether it will actually let you do something your current phone cannot.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is designed to make the familiar smartphone feel new again.
