You heard that right. Well, maybe the act of organising itself may feel like work but the amount of time we spend on the internet or riffling through magazines looking for hacks to be the best organised person ever is directly proportional to the urgency of the task.

How many times do you look up tips to declutter? You are doing that right now. Do you find yourself eyeing assorted baskets and boxes to store the stuff that’s all over the place? Do you think you need an extra room in the house to store the extra things you bought? Do you think…ok, yes, we know you should declutter and organise and that’s why you are reading on.

If you are a fan of Marie Kondo and her way of decluttering and organising but struggle to put it into practice, read on.

We rounded up some cool tips and tricks that would keep your house organised and easy to clean so that you can spend your evenings watching Netflix.

Tip #1 One In, One Out

This merely refers to getting rid of one thing for every new thing you buy or get in the house. It won’t let you build too much of an inventory to manage, or clutter you can’t handle. We have finite needs; we only need a finite number of things.

Tip #2 Don’t place a bigger object over a smaller one

Confused? Think piles and think what happens when you put something like a large book/newspaper/rag on a smaller object. The pile gets unwieldy very soon and hard to manage. Use this rule for all flat surfaces to prevent piles from building up.

Tip #3 Think Vertical

When you are running out of space to store, go vertical. You can install shelves along the walls of your kitchen or bathrooms, stack stuff vertically, a là books or plates, or have planters aligned vertically on the walls of your balcony. Look for space in unconventional places and angles.

Tip #4 Compartmentalize while home organizing

Divide and rule. Put in compartments in your drawers, on your desk, in your closet or have smaller bins and boxes to sort things. Better still, use colour coding to sort things in these compartments.

Tip #5 Stay motivated

You have come far in your organisation odyssey but it’s still early to call over your friends for a bash to show off your tidy house. To keep you on track and motivated, take the before and after pics of the cluttered area that you just cleaned out. That’s some great validation.

Use these tips on all your organising efforts and see your house look tidy miraculously.

You too can share your tips and be featured on BeStorified.
