But beginners need guidance so that their skills blossom into something aesthetic. They also need to know how long is the road to being a successful (and possibly, famous) writer, and what they would encounter on the way.

Here are the simplest of tips that we curated for beginner and emerging writers to stay motivated.

Reading leads to Writing

If you are a voracious reader, you can become a natural writer. You already have an ear for words, themes and structure and you can tell a well-written book from a badly-written one.

“Read, read, read. Read everything – trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You’ll absorb it. Then write. If it’s good, you’ll find out. If it’s not, throw it out of the window.”
William Faulkner

The books you have read become your arsenal, your tools to do the work of writing.

“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time — or the tools — to write. Simple as that.”
Stephen King

Stay Regular

Being regular at writing is one of the most essential things in a writer’s life. Writing should not be a flash-in-the-pan phenomena. You have to keep writing, keep at being consistent and keep at improving your writing skills.

“Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things, you’re doomed.”
Ray Bradbury

One thing that writers often talk about is inspiration. If you sit around waiting to be awed by a theme, or be inspired by a topic, then you might spend nearly all your time waiting.

“Show up, show up, show up, and after a while the muse shows up, too.”
Isabel Allende

Have a Method

Great writing isn’t just talent; it is in fact, skill that they have developed over a period of time. As a writer, know what works for you in terms of writing goals, the time you spend on writing and the projects you take on. Have little rituals and habits that move you ahead.

“Always carry a notebook. And I mean always. The short-term memory only retains information for three minutes; unless it is committed to paper you can lose an idea for ever.”
Will Self

Work more and soon you will be working better.

“Creativity is merely a plus name for regular activity. Any activity becomes creative when the doer cares about doing it right, or better.”
John Updike

And lastly, know your why. Know why is it that you are committed to the written word and expressing yourself through writing.

“We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.”
Anais Nin

If you want to share anything on a topic you care deeply for, send us your submission.
