In every period there have been and are social issues<\/a> that desperately need to be addressed in one way or the other. But preachy methods are not going to make people think about it nor is it going to evoke healthy conversation. The message should be said in a subtle way that even a common man could understand the consequences of his or her actions or the society at large. What best way than adding a little bit of fun and entertainment? Think about it, it\u2019s like killing two birds with one stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why would anyone pass on getting educated while being entertained?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Indian cinema has always been known for its unique storytelling and impactful performances. Over the years, many South Indian movies have not only entertained audiences but also started social conversations on important issues. Let’s take a look at some of these Kollywood <\/a>(Tamil) movies that left a mark on society and created a buzz among common people, that brought the social conversation into our homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bombay (1995) <\/h2>\n\n\n

India is a culturally and religiously diverse country and there is no need to mention the disputes that arise even today because of the differences in opinion between different sections of people and their backward-thinking attitudes. Talk about Boomers\u2026 There is no way we can convince them otherwise. This Tamil movie addressed the most important issue at a sensitive time, religious intolerance and the need for religious harmony. It depicted the story of a Hindu-Muslim couple and their struggles to live together in a society torn apart by religious violence. This movie will surely make you all jittery and twitchy without even realizing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cult classic and there is no debate about it. When we see an injustice happening before our eyes, most times we choose to ignore it. But that would not be the case if you are a freedom fighter who spilled blood, sweat, and tears for our nation. This was exceptionally showcased in the story where an ex-freedom fighter takes matters into his own hands to fight against corruption in the government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, not many people go by any books and strictly follow any moral principles that we set for our lives and stand by them no matter what. So, to see someone be so headstrong while abiding by his principles is really powerful. This movie not only addressed the issue of corruption and the need for accountability in politics but will catch you off-guard with its climax. No more spoilers<\/em>\ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kannathil Muthamittal (2002)<\/h2>\n\n\n

Talk about an innocent victim of injustice to its core. It is brilliantly portrayed in this movie. Here we are complaining about little things in the comfort of our homes, on the other end of the spectrum there are people still fighting for their basic rights. Think about it, we are privileged in one way or the other. This movie unfurls in war-thrown Sri Lanka where nine-year child Amudha meets her real mother caught between filial love and bloody war.  It is all about the nuances of an innocent child\u2019s love and the consequences of a ruthless war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be ready with a box of tissue before starting the movie. You will need it for sure! And watch out for Manirathnam\u2019s epic shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Super Deluxe (2019) <\/h2>\n\n\n

This A rated Tamil movie caught people off-guard with the issue of gender identity and acceptance. That\u2019s what makes it a Thiagarajan Kumararaja movie, right? Four interwoven stories, all stand out for their brilliant portrayal of dark comedy. Every story had something or the other to teach you and that is the beauty because you are entangled in the mess but you don’t want to come out of it but rather go along with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movie also showcased the story of a transgender woman and her struggles to be accepted by her family and society, sparking social conversation about the need for acceptance and inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community. [Spoiler Alert!<\/em>] To those who are yet to watch the movie watch out for Rasukutty! He is innocently wise for his age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asuran (2019) <\/h2>\n\n\n

Vetrimaran proves time and again that he is in a different league on his own. It is a riveting piece of action drama that portrays the reality of the plight of underprivileged caste persisting in Tamil Nadu. [Heavy spoilers<\/em>] It showcases the teenage son of a farmer of under caste who kills the landlord and the father played by Dhanush goes to any extent to save his family from the havoc created. The movie in every manner justifies, still the poor condition of the underprivileged section of our community and you can feel anguish and pain transcend through the screen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This movie is a reality check for those who are living in a bubble not knowing the evils of casteism and social cohesion. A must-watch for sure!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of these movies can be seen in the way they have influenced society and brought about change. It is heartening to see that cinema is not just about entertainment, but also about creating awareness with thought-provoking stories and driving change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not just fun and entertainment, it\u2019s merely a part of a film. Yes, there are some exceptions, but a movie is an art and tool if used wisely will bring change to our society. Thus, it is important to take back these real-life lessons (and perhaps some of your own) that we need to keep in mind as we carve India into a progressive and pragmatic society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
