Representation and diversity in media have become crucial topics in today’s society and we have had some spellbinding performances from Indian Cinemas in recent years. We definitely appreciate the effort. But has Bollywood really come out of its old ways? Don\u2019t the nuances and notions still, remain the same regarding inclusivity in Hindi movies?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though Indian Cinema is much more than just Hindi movies, Bollywood is watched worldwide, there is no denying that. It acts as a bridge between different countries and cultures and it is something to be valued and cherished. However, it lacks many essential factors, and we need to bring them to light and hold Hindi cinema responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of the critical aspects of representation and diversity in Hindi movies is the inclusion of characters from underrepresented groups. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Traditionally, Bollywood has focused on representing dominant groups, such as white, heterosexual, and able-bodied individuals, while neglecting the voices and stories of marginalized communities, including people of colour, LGBTQ+ individuals, individuals with disabilities, and other minority groups. This lack of representation can perpetuate harmful stereotypes, reinforce biases, and contribute to social inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Take, for example, Samantha Akkineni had been browned up on Family Man 2 to pass her off to a Sri Lankan spy. Remember, Bhumi Pednekar in Bala or Ranveer Singh in Gully Boy? This Brownface Syndrome is stuck for years now where the actors go a shade or two deeper to fit into a role. And can you call that liberation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are surprised that Bollywood doesn\u2019t cast a transgender individual for movies like Laxmii or Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui. While it is commendable that movies like these are made and maybe given reasons that an actor becomes an actor when he is given varied roles, isn\u2019t there something called inclusivity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We needn\u2019t even bring up this topic! Kashmir is always represented as terrorists, South India is mostly Tamil, \u201cEnna Rascala\u201d and \u201cMadrasi\u201d, Punjab is \u201cBalle Balle\u201d and \u201cSarson ka Khet\u201d, and don\u2019t even get us started on North Eastern states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By challenging stereotypes and promoting empathy and understanding toward individuals from different backgrounds. Seeing diverse characters on screen or reading various book stories can broaden their perspectives, foster empathy, and encourage acceptance of differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Including diverse voices, stories, and talents in media can help break down barriers and provide opportunities for individuals from underrepresented groups to participate in creating and producing media content. This can lead to more diverse and authentic storytelling and foster a more inclusive media landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Audiences are becoming more diverse, and studies have shown that diverse media content can attract larger audiences and generate higher revenue. In addition, diverse representation in media can contribute to a positive brand image, customer loyalty, and social responsibility, which can benefit media companies in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
