  • Bangalore, as a metropolitan city has encouraged property development opportunities and provides high-paying employment prospects in the IT sector. The city, renowned as the Garden City of the country provided impeccable weather throughout the year. However, the last year has witnessed a major shortage of water around emerging suburbs across Bangalore. Leading into the summer of 2019, areas around the technology hub of Whitefield will be affected by water shortage. Measures should be taken by the government to monitor water utilization on a macro scale. Water shortage in such emerging localities is indeed affecting infrastructure development as residents are now capitalizing on opportunities where water supply is more than adequate. The usage of borewells are moreover adding to the trouble than simplifying the solution. Dry or scarce water supply is making it hard for residents to go about with their everyday activities. Karnataka mainly depends on the water supply from the river Cauvery to cater to water requirement demands. Because of this delay, people have to rely on private organizations who charge a significant amount even during off seasons. Excruciating weather owning to water scarcity As the summer approaches, residents are worried that the prices for water supply by prominent private bodies would increase to almost Rs. 1,500 as the weather gets excruciatingly hot. Total disregard to eco-friendly amenities like rainwater harvesting, excessive digging at emerging locations and water withdrawal from sustainable wells has created more of a threat than a solution. Property developers, who are trying to cater to rising residential demands, should keep in mind the importance of implementing eco-friendly technologies that would help them conserve water and recycle them for further utilization. Rainwater harvesting can help as one can save up sufficient rainwater that can be used for gardening and saving considerable renewable sources for a convenient living experience. Residents are getting frustrated as periodic complaints to regulatory bodies like BWSSM have gone in total vain. Legal borewell access compliance Based on the government records, there are close t0 3.70 Lakh legal borewells in the city. Private bodies are employing unlawful measures to withdraw water for commercial purposes, when the water from these borewells are strictly for domestic utilization. With no appropriate monitoring strategies, residents are unaware of how the water from respective borewells are utilized which created furthermore confusion. There are stringent actions into place now as BWSSB can close borewells if they notice any unlawful practices. For instance, BWSSB engineer in chief has admitted that people can access unauthorized borewells by paying a mere penalty of Rs. 4,500. However, if anyone exploits or breaks norms by commercially utilizing these borewells with permission from domestic bodies, then BWSSB has the equal right to close these borewells. Increase in maintenance charges The shortage of water has resulted in vendors increasing their prices. The summer has resulted in the need for more and uninterrupted supply of water. During peak seasons like the summer, prominent builders were getting more than 100 tanks loaded with water every single day. With the effective increase in the demand, water supply vendors are eventually demanding a substantial increase in payment. This has led to increase in maintenance charges for prospective apartments. Developers have advised residents to install aerators and water regulators in pipes in order to reduce the pressure of water. This would help them monitor the flow of water and how much is being utilized. Another troubling aspect about the city is the depletion of water bodies. Drastic change in climate and unlawful emission of harmful gases have either polluted our lakes or has dried them up. In conclusion, employing practices like reviving water bodies and rainwater harvesting are the only way ahead. For other practices like gardening, maintaining bathrooms and car wash, rather than getting water from private organizations, recycling rain water is certainly a safer and an affordable bet.
