If you went to college in ancient Greece you would have taken just four subjects: Geometry, Astronomy, Arithmetic and Music. The presence of music here along with heavier fields like arithmetic and astronomy speaks of how music is affected by principles of other disciplines. Music in general might be an aesthetic art form, but it too is founded on certain principles and includes certain aspects derived from other fields of discipline, like physiology, mathematics and psychology. This post shall attempt to briefly describe the means by which Carnatic music uses principles from other disciplines.
