We usually hear of the leaders of the First War of Indian Independence whenever the topic comes up. However, just leaders don't make a movement. The followers do. In 1857, a groundswell of common folk did whatever they could to contribute. And so did the courtesans, normally confined to the courts or their salons. These women were fiercely self-sufficient and could use their money where they wished, without waiting for permission.
