Kdrama love tropes we can’t get enough of

Even though all say it’s a cliché or cringy, most of us secretly love some kdrama tropes like forced cohabitation, fake identity, love triangles, and many more. These are some of our secret guilty pleasure watches that we are not so proud to admit. That’s right you are not the only one. Especially when it comes to K-drama, how can one be stone cold and not melt hearing characters say “It’s not even a dream. If it were it wouldn’t have been so painful” or something as simple as “If you come closer, I am never letting you go again”. Such sweet words are enough to convey love, right? What more can we ask?
Yet, for those who are veterans, who have binge-watched kdrama for ages, it’s very easy to spot a repetitive storyline or common tropes that are more than easy to identify. These tropes even have a separate fan base, even though people have seen them in movies and dramas endless times. This is because we just love them so much, we can’t let them go.
Here is a list of romantic Kdrama tropes that keeps us all hooked in episode after episode.
Forbidden Love
Our heart always yearns for something more if it is not rightfully ours or if we can’t have it. Think about whenever our parents tell us to not do something we so badly want to do right? The same logic applies here as well. But like a cherry on top here we are talking about love. This itself makes it even more intense and heart-wrenching.
The longing that the characters feel for each other and the short yet beautiful moments when their eyes meet or hands brush across each other, these moments are just WOW. And not to mention, the chemistry of the leads in such dramas is always electrifying that transcends the screen. This alone makes us want to wish for their ship to set sail.
Childhood friends
This is definitely an age-old trope. Yet, it is so sweet that we can help but watch their younger selves biker all the time for silly reasons, playing around without a care in the world. It makes us feel not only nostalgic but also warm and fuzzy inside.
What else is sweet? When two friends who’ve known each other since they were kids realize when they’re older that they are hopelessly, madly in love with one another. Maybe not at the same time, but they both eventually get to the same page.
And by nature, we are bound to root for these sweethearts.
Enemies to Lovers
Whatever is said and done, people can never get fed up with this love trope. Because where else in our real life will we get to meet such characters who always biker and say that they hate each other, announce their love just like that during a shouting match? Nope, never happening in our lives.
It’s the best thing to witness the lead characters start to realize that their feelings of loathing are actually feelings of love. And they start fighting their true feelings, which is the best kind of fighting. 1000points already! The confession scene of such lovers always gets the better of us. Always!
Noona romance
There is something about loving someone who is much older than us. This trope is where the younger boy falls in love with the older woman. These kinds of dramas are mostly slow burns; thus, it has a separate fan base. Sometimes it takes time for people to warm up to this concept, but once in, then everything just fades away.
In this kind of drama, the female character is mostly shown as a strong, independent yet imperfect woman who has this perfect plan for life and definitely not looking for love until… There is always a soulful connection between the leads that is beyond perfection!
Fake relationship
Not even once in anyone’s lifetime, such a bizarre thing can happen. Not even if we pray desperately to the heavens to bless us with such good looking and kind-hearted person to enter into a fake marriage or contract marriage with us. Let’s just dream instead it costs us nothing.
In such dramas, their relationship is meant only for a short time but they are the ones that last a lifetime. After becoming a part of each other’s lives, they eventually fall head over heels for each other as they get to know each other inside out. Even though they start off on the wrong terms their pure intentions and passionate love just win us over every time.
Special mention: Incoming – Exlovers
Not to miss, kdramas always have this evil ex-girlfriend or ex-boyfriend of the lead characters who come back just in time to help the main leads realize their love for one another. They are the driving force that brings the star-crossed lovers together in the end. However great their love might be, their Ex’s are the catalyst here. Thus, they need the due recognition that has been put off for so long.
