Food is the basic form of survival in any animal. But for us humans, it’s more than just a survival tool. Simple food can tell a lot about us, our culture, our upbringing, and even our mental state. Right from the ingredients, we use for preparation to our consumption patterns, food conveys a lot about the person.
All of us associate food with something or someone who is close to our hearts. Because food builds relationships, heals invisible wounds, and is a constant companion for a few. Now, let’s start by addressing the elephant in the room. What food really means to everyone?
Relationship with Food
What comes first to mind when one thinks of food? Of course, the answer differs from person to person. Even then it is the universal thing in every culture around the world. And it brings joy to everyone during a festival or celebration. But if you are a foodie then it is totally a different case. For foodies, it could be a place of happiness and solace. Or like a new adventure.
During our recent conversation about ‘Food and you’ with our community, here is what our tribe had to share about their relationship with food.
Food and yummy memories
Everyone has fond memory or in the worst case, a disastrous memory attached to food which we often reminisce upon. Whether it might the smell of mom’s cooking as we slouch down on the sofa after school or fight with our siblings over one extra pakoda, or reluctantly giving away our favorite chocolate to the neighbor’s kid. The wide variety of emotions that we feel when we think about our favorite food can’t be expressed through words easily.
Some nostalgic memories attached to food that our community members shared with us.
Food is all about comfort
Is there anyone in this whole wide world who doesn’t have a comfort food or a cheat meal that they love? If so, how is it even possible? We Indians, identify ourselves with food more than anything. We associate food with a lot of reasons starting from festivals and celebrations to sometimes downright absurd ones. Food is so much prioritized that everyone have not one but a list of comfort food depending upon their mood. Which is fun right? Normal food could be an answer to a very difficult situation in our life.

Food is the language of love
Definitely, preparing a warm meal for our loved ones is the best way to cheer them up and show our love. A good conversation over a meal with our loved ones always holds a special place in our hearts. Especially in the case of Indian parents, we can never expect “I am proud of you, son” or “I love you” from them. The best they can do is “Don’t skip your meals” or “Eat first and do whatever you want”. Some things never change. So do most parents love language.
Hold on! Here are some simple phrases that have deep meaning.
