Your Alexa is dropping, perhaps under 1 million? Awesome! You have a great number of followers on social media, maybe over 5000? Superb! But somehow you are still not happy with the way things are moving. Why? You don’t think numbers are everything in blogging, right? Well, we’d say numbers are important but these numbers can never beat content, engagement, and networking.

Here’s why numbers aren’t the be all and end all of blogging.

CONTENT WILL ALWAYS BE THE KING

No matter how many subscribers your blog has, it will grow only when you offer good content to your readers. Until you connect with your readers on an emotional or professional level through your content, numbers might soon start to fall. So, the one thing you need to heed is to always provide Unique Content to your readers.

ENGAGEMENT UNLOCKS MORE DOORS

The digital world is dynamic and unpredictable. It’s difficult to judge a person you have met online. Numbers are not always true. Followers can be bought, bots can be used to increase subscribers.

How do you differentiate? You look at engagement – the number of likes, comments and shares. As they say don’t judge the book by its cover, in a digital world it’s don’t judge a person by their followers.

YOU ARE NOT A NUMBER

While numbers may make a world go round, you or your brand are not limited to a figure. You have your own story, the work you do outside of your blog, the ideas you champion, the out of the box content ideas you use to create impact – all of this provides a more holistic picture of who you are.

The numbers will come. The following will increase. Once you start focusing on things that matter – value addition to your reader, establishing your thought leadership through highlighting what makes you unique, and engaging with your repeat and new visitors.

It is important to remember there is a human behind a brand and a human who will engage with the brand. A person is likelier to go to a brand with the lesser following but quicker response time. On the journey of blogger to thought leadership through #LeaderChatter all April. Come back for more!
